Finding a passion for reading is something that we, as very good friends, found extremely challenging. Our school experience of reading unseen text in front of peers was traumatic. These difficulties then became even more apparent when we had children of our own. We both knew how important it was to read to our babies and we really wanted to share this special time together, but we were worried about doing it wrong! How do you read a story to a baby or toddler? However, we were extremely lucky to have supportive partners who could join in with voicing characters to build excitement and meaning to the stories. As a nursery teacher and secondary school teacher, our confidence grew and our storytelling, after time, became very natural. We learnt by example and practice, and you can too!
On the following pages, we have put together some strategies and ideas to help you engage with the characters and the stories and encourage your young listeners to be future passionate readers.
